[added r1417] Purpose of the "Primary" Category Select

When entering an item, one can select one or more categories.

Under that selector is a drop down selector labeled "Set primary"

What is the purpose and use of the primary category. When would I want to use it?
When would I want to ignore it?

Thank you.

J1.5 and J2.5 only allow --one-- category per "article"

For FLEXIcontent this is the primary category.

An item is obligatory to have "primary" category, because J1.5 / J2.5 require it (even "uncategorised" is a category)

somebody remarque this :
before 1.5.5
we can select only 1 category on primary
after 1.5.6
we do two selection 1 category on primary and secondary
... same selection if we need only primary category ... strange not ?

mmm, you don't have to select anything in the secondaries categories. The primary category which is obligatory , will appear in secondaries categories too

Hi,

I think for good UI - if a user selects only one secondary category - it could count as the primary category.

Not sure if this is possible - but a lot of my support emails are about this issue.

It used to be possible in the old Flexicontent...

Cheers,

Robert

Yes it is possible, the JS validation function for the primary category field could:

- check if a value is set
- then if not, it could count categories selected on the secondaries categories field, and if only one is selected, then this single category, could be set as primary,
- then, it would return success for primary category field validation so that form can submit successfully

just thinking out loud
