Thank you very much for the hints.
I finally could achieve this using the module.
Filter-settings under "select items": exclude "Currently viewed item scope" / advanced filtering "Items in the same category"

My previous attempt was faulty, some items didn't have subcategories assigned...

FLEXIcontent is Free but involves a very big effort on our part.
Like the our support? (for a bug-free FC, despite being huge extension) Like the features? Like the ongoing development and future commitment to FLEXIcontent?
