I am having this same problem, but I couldn't find the settings described in this solution:
"Category view" : Display "Single" and not "Single Total"

I can't find this "Single" or "Single Total" setting in the Category view.

Hello

you need to go to the image field that you are using and edit it
then find its display parameters for category view and select the display that you wish to have
