It also broke the logo on my template, wich was at the root of /image, so I solved it with hacking htaccess ( <FilesMatch ".gif"> instead of <FilesMatch ".*">
but always have the issue with category

Hello

> I have installed 3.3 , should I go back to 3.2 ??

please send me a PM with a link i want to check if HTML is broken ?
or is the default category image not injected at all ?

where did you configure the default category image ?
- this is the change for default category image, we added a default category image also in component configuration
can you check there too ?

why do you mention .htaccess ? it should not be related to .htaccess

will create you an access in admin and send to your adress

this is not category image, this is item field image view in category view

will send you the links that not work

I do mention htaccess because another post talked about it and it solved a part of my issue

Hello

So you mean the default image via the parameter inside the image-gallery field ?

Hello

The thumbnails (small, medium, large) seem to be created properly

The direct access via URL to them give a 404 not-found error
- maybe some bad .htaccess rule

Test this
rename your .htaccess file to e.g. .htaccess.bakup1
and the use joomla default htaccess  file
and test

Or

maybe something is creating an .htaccess file inside
/images/
or inside /image/stories/
or inside /image/stories/flexicontent/
