This is probably why you are having problems

This is from their website:

The 1.4 release requires legacy mode and is less performant.

You probably need to upgrade to the commercial version

I'm not sure how well anything that runs in legacy mode incorporates with flexicontent since flexicontent is forwardly programmed

I still use FlexiContent 1.5 beta 5 (because of some changes I made to the core). I don't use DocMan anymore because I changed to use FlexiContent for that purpose. But I still have DocMan v1.4 stable installed with Joomla legacy mode.

The FlexiContent DocMan plugin still works in my situation. So, I can't reproduce the problem. Have you checked that the plugin is published in the Joomla plugin manager?
