Is it possible to limit the categories to only show the first 100 items?

edit:
if I put ?limit=99 as a query string the list will limit to the desire number but this way the user can change the number.

I wanted to open category.php and add something like:

$this->params->set('limit' , 10) ;

This does not work, any ideas?

mmm, i think i understand what you mean,

you have a category that continuesly grows in the number of items that it has, but you want the frontend to only show the first 100 of them according to the choosen ordering ???

the limit variable ,
that you mention is used for pagination,
is configurable in the category parameters (=items per page),
e.g. aka 100 items per page, but then it will link to the next page ...

You are asking of some limit like the item limit in universal module ?
