Catalog table display use custom field names as table header

We have a product catalog and we are trying to dosplay it in a table. We would like to display the header as it is in the "default" template, but we would like to display and list our custom fields rather than the default (author", "Created" and so forth).

I was wondering if there is already a provision for displaying items in this fashion other than the "default template and choosing the "list" display.

I tested other link types, but some generated a 404 (missing privileges apparently) and others displayed just the title and it wasn't even linkable (but I guess I could steal the code from the blog style template).

before we go ahead and try to write our own template I wanted to check here to make sure we are not reinventing the wheel.

You speak of category view?

the category layout of default template can do this, you can drag and drop your fields in the layout,
or do you speak of something else?

We are talking about the same thing. Turns out that last night I was very tired and I manipulated the wrong template. Naturally, nothing showed up and I thought I misunderstood how it worked. Logically, I knew it should work, but nothing was showing up.
