Is it possible to have a file field visible to the public but the actual download working only for logged in users?

There is already an implementation for this , it is more powerful than what you describe:

-- CURRENTLY you can set the view level per file for every file in filemanager, then if the frontend user has the required view level then he can view & download the file

The modification has parameters
-- no access display: to show the item in short or normal details when no access
-- no access URL: to give a URL to link the filename or download button (e.g. login URL e.g. buy subscription URL)
-- no access message: to prepend filename or download button with an "no access" message
-- no access add variable: will append to the above no access link variable: file_id, field_id, item_id so that you can have a custom script handle the case ... e.g. custom buying code

But i don't think commit this , or i risk breaking the file field (also a slideshow template for universal module, also inline paged gallery for image field etc)

Currently, i ll only want to commit updates to new advanced search feature and it's filtering

That sounds good. What is your guess (roughly) on when that modified field will be committed and available?

I could give you modified 'file' field only to test since it needs no changes to core files

Thanks, but then I would always override this field with the "official" FC revision when updating via the repository, right? I think I wait for the time it gets implemented in the revision cycle.
