connecting articles between them

hello
I have 2 categories of articles :
- authors
- books

In the book type I have a select field with the sql list of all authors available.

Now in the detail page of the author I want to show the image of each of his book with, of course, a link the detail of the corresponding book.

is there a field type which can do that automatically or
do I need to do an iframe with the search page of the book of an author ? (author is a search field)

thank you for advices
best regards
Michel

You mean 2 "types" (not categories) of items , right?

You can use fields "Related Items" and "Related Items Backlinks"

1. Create a "Related Items" field with name "Authored Books" or similar
2. In this field configuration, assign this field to "Author" Content Type

3. Create a "Related Items Backilinks" field with name "Authored By" or similar a
4. In this field configuration, assign this field to "Book" Content Type
5. In this field configuration, set parameter reverse field to be "Authored Books"

6. Add these field to appropriate template positions

-- Now your items of type "Author" Will show a list of links to books
-- Now your items of type "Book" will link back to their "Author"

Note: since r1617+ you can use add to the above list any custom field

e.g. the list of books can display image field, date field etc etc

Feature is finished but no public release yet

Create everything else (you will only see links) and when you update you will edit field configuration of "Related Items" to add e.g. the image field to the book list

NOTE, i took opportunity and i have just add this new FAQ article:

Relations between Types, Using Related Items and Related Items Backlinks Fields

Thank you very much
It's work perfectly.

I'm waiting to get the images in the new version. Do you have an estimated date of availability ?

Just a detail for the tutorial :
I have reversed the order : I begin to open an author (he may have more than one book) then I create the book(s).
In the tutorial each time I created a book I needed to go back to the author article to add the new book.

When I do the reverse, I create an author and then for each book I choose in the list of author the one to be attached to the book.

best regards
Michel

Off course , it is implied that you add existing books to the author, and in future the author may write more books and you will need to create book and the edit author to add it

Hello
I have a new questions about linking articles.

Initially I have authors who own books. With related items and related items backlink I get the list of all books owned by the author in the author type article.

Now I have been asked something else : in the book page I need to show all books from the authors (the same info displayed in the author page)

I have tried to add the 'books owned by author' field from the author type to the book type (a link on the same record type : In this case I get an empty field.

Is possible to link in each book page from the author all the books owned by this author ?

thank you for help
best regards
Michel

This field 'books owned by author' has value for items of Content Type 'author' and your are trying to display it inside an item of Content Type 'book'

The updated Related Items / Related items Backlinks field could possible do this, but this has been disabled to avoid loops
