Interface to Existing Schemas: External Storage

I have external database schemas that are not part of Joomla at all. They are part of other products, so their organization cannot be changed.

Can FlexiContent provide views on selected tables and columns? Can FlexiContent be used to edit table content, such as modifying column values, adding rows, deleting rows, etc.?

no .. you need to use joomla structure ...
may be you can use a import/export system like FLEXIimport extensions.netassopro.com/5-exte ... fleximport
contact him

FLEXIcontent is Free but involves a very big effort on our part.
Like the our support? (for a bug-free FC, despite being huge extension) Like the features? Like the ongoing development and future commitment to FLEXIcontent?

Hello,
FLEXIcontent CCK , and any other CCK,
can not be used as DB manager of various DB schemas and their tables,
(it can be used to create custom field with custom SQL to output some of these data)

Generic DB management Tools like as you describe are tools like e.g. phpmyadmin

Regards

@ggppdk - I'm not looking to for generic tools such as phpmyadmin. My issue is that I want to be able to have Joomla content items whose content can come from a non-Joomla database. We want the presentation to be the Joomla website so that it is fully integrated into our company website.

We have software that manages inventory in MySQL. We would like to be able to have a CCK that can access that data and allow us to view in a Joomla web page inventory items. For example, suppose we have the fields:

item_name
item_description
available_quantity

We would want to be able to show the above information in Joomla so that users can browse inventory items. For admins, we want to be able to change the item_description or available_quantity in Joomla and have those changes reflected back into the database.

If FlexiContent were able to do such a thing, it would make it hugely popular as it would open it up for all sorts of use cases where integration with existing database tables is needed.

@micker - being restricted to the Joomla database, of course, seems to us to be an unnecessary restriction. I can imagine that the backend can simply allow the user to provide the connection details to the database to connect to. Importing/Exporting is not an option because the database is being updated by other software that is running on the server. We just want Joomla to give us another way of viewing data that integrates into our website (so that the general public can view the content items) and, secondarily, to give us another mechanism (perhaps usable on mobile devices) for admins to update the database (in much more limited ways than using a database viewer such as phpMyAdmin or MySQL Workbench).

General purpose CCKs such as FLEXIcontent, K2, Zoo, etc. are not designed for data warehouse type database functions.
While some data access is useful for certain features (e.g. select lists),
I think full remote database features are best left to dedicated tools.

Data Display
There are a number of extensions with plug-ins which may be used to display tabular data from a remote database in a FLEXIcontent content item.
See the Data Reports category on the JED.
These could be used to display your inventory data.

Data Edit/Update
There are other CCK or Form type extensions which are already designed for and already support remote database edit/update functions.
See Fabrik and ContentBuilder for example.
These could be used by admins to update your inventory data.

Not perfect and pretty, but it would get the job done.
And it is doable now.

Finally ...
There are so many other new features in the FLEXIcontent roadmap right now that I do not see this one happening any time soon.
For example far more users would benefit from the planned Application Packs (content kits) feature.
This and a number of other feature requests should probably come first.
