Hello,
After you change the Content Type of items then you do not need to assign template to every item.

It will use the Content Type's default template, unless you have set a template to every individual item ?

Yes, if i change the content type then i don't have to change the template i can change the template for all the items using this content type in one go, but the problem arises with changing the content type of thousands of items in my website. I am cool doing it but i guess it would be awesome to have it as an option in the next version or so!

Ok,

but for selecting items to change content , how it should be?

I am thing of a new button in items manager
exactly like the new Item button

So you
- filter in items manager and
- then you select the items
- click button "Change Type" that opens a popup to select the content Type,
- and then clicking on the content type , changes the Content Type
