I would like to know how i can use a url instead of a direct image upload.
All the image galleries exist only with images from the folders of the site.
This is actually bloating up the site. I would like to know if there is any work around for this where i can give the link of my image uploaded else where and pull the image.

Hello,

you mean your ORIGINAL images take up a lot of space ?

1. thumbnails have to be locally because they are created by local PHP code
2. thumbnail checking will become super slow,
not it is optimized to be fast for local files,
so unless we implement some workaround this will make site very slow

-- so what you ask is not trivial at all

PS: about performance
Universal content is the only part of frontend that was not optimized in v2.0.2

in v2.1.0+

if your site has many items and you are using universal content module, then you will see a big performance improvement
(module will be created 10x,20x faster or more in fact it nows has a constant speed regardless of size of website)

Regards

Speed of the site is not the concern only the size of the site. With images the size of the site blows out of proportion very quickly. Yes i can host the images on external hosts and give the links in the editor - jce or jck but, i don't know how i could do that with flexi content.
I understood why it is not trivial. The php code could only generate thumbnails if the image exists on local host so downloading the image and creating the thumbnail on the go would take huge hit on the performance.
I would like to suggest that this could be a one time deal - as in the first user who goes to that page will have to wait a bit longer for the creation of thumbnails would take a lot of time but the subsequent requests would be served faster since the thumbnails have already been created.
There is another extension which follows this procedure. It is the Admiror Gallery Plugin.
P.S. I am not trying to be rude. If the suggestion seems like building castles in the air - ignore it!

Hello,

Issue 1

I would like to suggest that this could be a one time deal - as in the first user who goes to that page will have to wait a bit longer for the creation of thumbnails would take a lot of time but the subsequent requests would be served faster since the thumbnails have already been created.

Indeed this would happen, it would happen as you say one for the first visiting user
... but it will happen ONLY if you change the thumbnail size configuration
-- So yes this behavior is not a problem

Issue 2:
- thumbnail size check is possible without getting original image
- but check if image size of original image is same as large/medium/etc thumbnails is not possible (we have a parameter for this)

the second of the above 2, is not important anyway so we could skip it for external images

so i guess it feasible to change image field , will register this for a future implementation

Regards

this is possible
Ok,

I have done some search for other extensions that accomplish this feat i.e. creating galleries without having the pictures on the site.
I found a category in the joomla extension directory - Content Galleries i suppose
Core Design Web Gallery
and Pp Gallery.
They create galleries right out of content with short tags, not from folders.

I thought this info might help you!

P.S. This info is in no way meant to intimidate your efforts or compare them, please don't misunderstand my words - (happens a lot of times)
