please note this:

alternatively you can use the category view as directory view too

because our category view is very powerful with a lot of parameters (i mean not the item list parameters, i mean parameter for filters, subcategories, etc),

you can set "# items per page" to zero for the top-level category to get a directory like view, and of course you should enable parameters that shape the subcategories, etc
