Mechanism to compare items?

Hi there,

I recently implemented FlexiContent on a test site and have set it up with a single test content type with several custom fields.

Is it possible to set up a mechanism in FlexiContent that allows for a side by side comparison of two or more items, so that those custom fields can be seen side by side for easier comparison?

The CCK called K2 has this capability with a third party extension, however, K2 is not ideal since it replaces the user registration and management parts of Joomla. Here is the link to the K2 example of what I would like: extensions.joomla.org/extensions/extensi.../k2-extensions/22060

Thank you for your time!

Best Regards,
Eric

Hello

not difficult to implement, just not done yet, e.g. usergroup configuration (like user/author configuration) is of higher priority

this is the way to do:
add a new button (like print/edit buttons) to add/remove item ids to a cookie and then also add a new compare template

the above is in the TODO for v2.2.1

This sounds great. Do you have an idea, even if it is somewhat vague, as to when 2.2.1 will be available?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,
Eric

Hello

compare feature is a nice feature and so is the endless scroll (category model is already partially modified for a future support of it)

adding a compare feature is about 1-2 full day including implementation and testing to add:

- the new add-to compare button
- the new FLEXIcontent 'compare' template

and then we will also have to support it
e.g. then we will need to create different compare configuration for every content type
-- thus add a new configuration parameter to content type to select which FLEXIcontent template to use for comparing,
-- and what about comparing different content types ? will this be allowed ?

so fully supporting it is a bit more complex that we may anticipate initially

so adding to v2.2.0 will delay it even more

So this feature can be in v2.2.1 BETA during 2nd half of May

Regards

Hi there,

Thank you very much for responding to me.

In response to your question below about different content types being used for comparisons: no, at least not at first.

Here is why. The standard use case for a feature like this is to have the ability to show, side by side, the values of similar items. For example, It is very helpful to see the statistics (price, fuel efficiency, legroom, etc.) on two cars side by side, but to compare two completely different content types together would make no logical sense. For example, a car and a microwave oven: the unique fields would not be the same.

The web site user would be interested in showing many similar items side by side, sometimes 10 or more items. But not completely dissimilar items and content types.

Best regards,
Eric

Hi there,

No problem. I understood what you meant. :-) I was speaking as a product manager in the software field - analyzing the use cases for all web sites. I manage a portfolio of software products in my day job. In my experience, comparing vastly dissimilar types of items (e.g. airplane to beach ball) would not be effective.

However, there could be some uncommon cases where that assumption would be incorrect.

Are you hearing from other customers that they need to have the ability to compare items from different content types? If so, it would be interesting to hear their use cases and how they differ from my experience.

Best Regards,
Eric

maybe to 3 way
-compare only item with same type (side by side)
-compare item without same type and display only commun field
-compare item without same type and display all field but a message in uncommun line
