Hello

yes it is a requirement enforced not by us but by new Youtube API v3 ...

e.g. new twitter policy (since about end of 2015) they require -big- money and API key to show share counts ...
youtube API key is free unless you have a very high traffic website ...

- about bug: data being old/existing video data being lost on item save, if key is not configured
we will fix this
