Multiple items in Multiple Categories

I am having difficulty with viewing items in multiple categories. I have looked for documentation or explanations on how to do this but have only found instructions on un-assigning items. I have selected multiple secondary categories for the appropriate items and per the recent 'note' in the newest release of FC, I have also checked the radio button for Featured Joomla / Featured View. The items in these categories only show up once, in the primary categories and not at all in any of the secondary categories.
The parent category has all items assigned to it as one of their secondary categories. These items are also assigned to various secondary categories under the parent category, with a particular secondary category as the primary, depending on the item. None of the items appear in the upper-most-parent category - which is a good thing; they do appear in their respective primary categories, the bad thing is that items do not show up in any of their selected secondary categories.
I would appreciate some direction on how to correct this issue.

Symptoms:
Items are in multiple sub-categories; first level down with several peers
Items only show in categories for which they are selected as primary.
when viewing the items, they only show a parent and a single sub-category - the category that is selected as primary category for that item.
