Not planing on working on it in the short term
The effort that was put in v3.1.x was to fix its performance in item form (done)

it used to be have the ability that you describe in older version when we were preloading the full list of item ids in the selector
but that had performance issue and we
- AJAXified it
- also made AJAX loading to load only for a given category

thus making it very fast during usage, and also have zero delay during form load

with some JS coding it is possible to implement, an improvement for the future

Ok, it's clear.
But I hope you understand, that now adding related items is very uncomfortable.
1. No highlight already added items.
2. Possible to add itself item.
3. No tooltip with parent category data (if previous conditions (1 and 2) not realized).

I just want to let you now, that now during adding related items, we need to waste too much time only for understanding - if we add correct related item, may be we added itself item, may be this item already added...
