[Joomla media manager limitation] Select Category Image times out with 10,000 images

There are over 10,000 images in our image directory. We can easily select an image from the directory for items, however for categories we time out before any images can be selected. In older versions of Flexicontent I was able to add the image in the database , but this no longer seems to work. Any suggestions ? Our images are always sized to the exact display size.
oh and our memory_limit is 256M

unfortunately this is very difficult to solve
(not impossible, see below)

you see the Joomla media manager is used for selecting category image

Solution would have been to create subfolders instead of adding 10,000 images to same folder
and put e.g. up to 50 or 100 images in every sub-folder

Now, if you move the existing images to subfolders
then existing image assignments as category images and other image assignments in 3rd party will break

What we could (try) do inside FLEXIcontent,
is NOT to use the images layout provided by Joomla media manager

and instead create a custom template that will do
- lazy loading of images
- and (maybe also) pagination

For this particular issue I was able to resolve it by using this extension to replace the core Joomla media manager.
