Item+field specific folder : how to disable file increment ?

Hello,
My question is about "image or gallery" field.
I put parameters to "Item+field specific folder" so each user can upload images, stored on a specific folder (related to item ID). But if the user change the image with a new one (in case of rectification), the old image is still stored on the folder, and the new one is incremented with a number (1, then 2, then 3, etc.)
image.jpg
Then image-1.jpg
Then image-2.jpg
And so on.

It's inconvenient for two points :
- there are many versions of each images stored in the folder and, ultimately, it ends up weighing heavily on the server.
- if the user post the link of his image (on a forum for example), he have to edit the link each time he uploads a new one.

Is there a way to correct this ?

Naming -nn is to avoid preventing uploads because of uploading image with same name
we have no way of knowing if the user wants to replace an image or upload extra

Imagine after a year you upload extra images and some of the names collide with older
and they get automatically replaced and LOST !!!

Then we will have users reporting a BUG of images being overwritten and having "Data Loss"

The way it works is like this

1. The (per item-field) image folder contains some images e.g. 20
2. And then you assign some of the 20 images to the image-gallery field e.g. 10 of them,
the rest of images are available for future use ...

The way to go is
we can put limits
- to total number files
- to total file used

This way you will force users to limit images themselves

I understand this is due to avoid data lost.
Maybe you can add a simple option in field configuration to choose between "replacement and data lost" and "increment for no data lost".
Then, add a simple message in form to prevent user of the choosen option.
So, users can't complain about data lost if this occur.

Is it possible to add these feature (in addition with your suggestion of limit number of images) ?

Last 2 day did work to add support to file manager Statistics re-indexer to re-index data for a field
I will be add more cases and checks to it so that there can be easier cleanup or report of unused files

but if user is linking to the image inside description this will not be reported

about the image - gallery field, will add the per item limits
for
total size limit and total uploaded files
