JComments counter in flexicontent

As far as I know, the comments counter for JComments isn't included in the category or item templates for flexicontent. Anybody know how to implement the comments counter for JComments? I've tried tons of things but haven't been successful. The first thing I used was the code from the JComments developer guide on how to display the comments counter but it didn't work. Please help because this is a much needed feature for my site and I need to get it to work.
