So you say to add an option to related items Field to FORCE main category instead of the one we used to select an item?

is that what you have in mind?

ummm not sure what you mean by maincategory
let try with an example :

if i have the followings cat :
flexiroot/catalogue/sub_catalogue/item_productA
flexiroot/directory/sub_directory/item_ownerB
and the 2 items related by a field

when i'll be in the content "item_productA", if i clic on the field, i would like to go to :
flexiroot/directory/sub_catalogue/item_ownerB

and not (like now) to :
flexiroot/catalogue/sub_directory/item_ownerB

I am i clear ?
