Field Type dropdown box not populated was created by lightning

I have a clean Joomla! 1.5.15 install, with beta 5a from here. When I try to create a new field, the drop down box for field type is blank, and the properties never show up (I've tried apply/save, and looked at the default fields - this is always blank).

Should I just try a new install, or are there some settings I've missed?

Also, NB: nothing ever shows up under the 'Items' tab, regardless of publishing state. This includes items that have been created directly from the FC interface. Are these issues related?
