Multiple Categories Field

I was wondering if one could create multiple category fields. Let me give an example of how this could be useful.

I could set "cuisine" as a category. So a user could click on the category "Chinese Restaurant" and could see all the Chinese restaurants in the city.

However, he may also want to see all types of restaurants in a particular location. Thus, if there are two types of category fields then the user can search by either a cuisine category or for a particular location.

This would be a fabulous feature to have

So you suggest, that the categories filter should allow multi-select,
right?

NOTE:
that even if we add multi-selection in categories filter,
it will be applied with OR and not with AND (you need AND right?)

No. I meant it differently. Let me give you a link to explain.

bangalore.hotkhana.com/guide/eat ... ampur.html

Here location bangalore.hotkhana.com/guide/search-by/l...ion/Koramangala.html is a link and if clicked on it it will display all the restaurants available in that location.

One also has the option of clicking on cuisine bangalore.hotkhana.com/guide/search-by/c.../North%20Indian.html to see the various cuisines available in that city.

Hope this explains

Perhaps I do not understand correctly or I am thinking too simple but why do you not just assign a restaurant to multiple categories?

Let me rephrase. Just like we can have multiple fields of the same field type, is it possible to have multiple category fields?

The reason for this ask is that one item could have different attributes. In the case of Eating out, the following attributes is important:

Type of eating out - Restaurant, bar, cafe etc

Location - London East, London West, london North etc

Cuisine - Greek, French, Mediterranean etc

If each of these attribute could be a different category type then this offers a huge advantage for owners of directories.

This is a feature which is available with Moset Tree. Hope this clarifies

I see what you mean

- this is not implemented
- it is possible to implement
- i can see why this is user-friendly !!

NOTE: (as you already know) our current way for handling categories is having a single form field to select multiple categories

so e.g in your case we have

- Type of eating out
-- Restaurant
-- Bar
-- Cafe

- Location
-- London East
-- London West
-- London North

- Cuisine
-- Greek
-- French
-- Mediterranean

What you suggest is to allow creation of multiple category fields, that will
1. display the sub-category tree of a selected top-level category
e.g. in your case, 3 category fields, with top-level categories:
- Type of eating out
- Location
- Cuisine

This will
1. make the category selection more user-friendly
2. force the user to select (thus assigns) the item in each categories section
- Type of eating out
- Location
- Cuisine

-- on item save, the selected categories are saved as normal in the DB (no need to change anything in the DB / core),
-- on item load, the various categories fields will load and show the selected categories in their subcategory tree:
... e.g. field "Location" will show the selected category under sub-category tree: "Location"

Is the above what you have in mind ?

Hi,

I guess this is exactly what I was looking for .. :D www.flexicontent.org/forum/index.php?f=20&t=5434&rb_v=viewtopic
If so, this will be TOTALLY GREAT.

It is a kind of filter but this will be far better for navigating articles because we can list one or more category's articles..

Like, I wanted to display only selected models from BMW or some mixed models from even different Brands like, Toyota, Audi.

Some ideas in terms of user view,
1. In single page view(for Wide screen), display 3 categories with its sub categories and all categories should be checkbox, User should be able to tick appropriate category(ies) for Type of eating out, Location and Cuisine.
e.g If London West(Location), North(Location) and French(Cuisine) selected then all related items should be displayed.
We should be able to use Filter module for this result page as well.

2. In multiple page view(for Mobile), If user select Location, then Cuisine will be displayed as next step.

3. If there are 3 section that I want to setup,
e.g 1. Car Brand, 2. Location(City) and 3. Body Type,
These should be order-able in backend.
e.g 1. Location(City), 2. Car Brand and 3. Boty Type.

What you have suggested is a brilliant idea and would be very user-friendly.

However, I have a slightly different thought. For what you have suggested, it would help an user narrow down to a particular eating out type in a city.

For eg if I am looking for a restaurant which serves French cuisine in a locality East London then your idea would help users. However, if there are no French restaurants in East London, then the user would not be getting any search results. Therefore, it would be best to use a search-filter.

Also, the above method could become very cumbersome for backend publishers as there could be many, many cuisines, locations.

On the other hand, if someone is looking for a French restaurant in East London and doesn't find it there he can click on the cuisine type which is French and get to see all the French restaurants in London. This is useful as a user would be willing to travel to other parts of London.

Cheers!
