We would like category pages that include an alpha index to have the initial display include no items. Ideas on how we can do that ?

Hello

it is already implemented, and does a little more:
you can have zero or you can have a SPECIFC number of items or specific number of featured items

(v3.0.14-RC2a)
- you can limit LIMIT / SUPPRESS item list
unitil you submit the filtering / Alpha / TEXT search form

(in v3.0.15)
you can also display "featured" until users submits the form

go to component parameters (click configuration button)
and then to TAB: "Lists: Filtering"

and enable the feature (see the picture) AND use ZERO Items before submit:

thank you - that is what I was looking for
I am only finding a way to make this global, is there a way to specify this per category (we have several categories that do not display the alpha index) ?

Hello

yes, the same setting exists inside every category
- edit category to set it
TAB: parameters
sub-TAB: Alpha-Index, Search, Filters

note, if you want to effect sub-categories, then only edit the parent category, and the sub-categories will inherit from the parent

[EDIT]
in component parameters, inside TAB: Listing views
make sure that you have set parameter :
"Inherit parameters from" --> Parent categories

Hello

you were lucky
- because this is very recent feature !

otherwise we would just open an enhancement issue (want to keep track of good ideas) possibly with no specific date
