$customdate			= $field->parameters->get( 'custom_date', '' ) ; 

$dateformat = $dateformat ? $dateformat : $customdate;

$query = "SELECT.... FROM .... ORDER BY STR_TO_DATE('field_name',JText::_($dateformat));

I didn't use the code you provided, but with that function it now works
