ah, thanks.
since i'm on a slightly earlier version i'll stick with this solution for now:

$img = str_replace("/s_", "/l_", FlexicontentFields::getFieldDisplay($item, 'img_01') );

FLEXIcontent is Free but involves a very big effort on our part.
