Custom field in categories

Hi, I know that the request has been mentioned before in the forum. I would like to add a text "Featured products from subcategories", but only if items form subcategories are shown. Problem is that sometimes a category has item that are only in this category and subcategories. Anyway, I see three different ways to add this text and only one is possible with the current FC implementation:
- a second template which is a copy of the original template with the added text "Featured products from subcategories". I would just assign this template to the category that shall show the text and assign items from subcategories also to this category. Of course, I have to maintain two templates...
- a custom field for categories
- a featured article function that displays featered articles from subcategories.

Any other ideas?

You suggest something like a new field that would allow to select "related categories"

Then in item view "related" items from these categories will be shown? The number and order of items would be configurable, random, most-viewed etc

if yes, this could be consider as an addition and we already have an enhancement issue open:

when it will be implemented, i cannot say now
