Filter

Is it possible to have a Filter system as in the Item Administration for the Category view layout?

I would like the list of filters to be in a dropdown:

Title search box, sort by alphabet dropdown, Type dropdown, Date range or year wise, Author list dropdown, Categories/sub-category dropdown.

In the above link, there is the Filter options/bar. Is it possible to put Alphabital filter in a dropdown like the Document type? And also maybe with a Year-wise (published year) dropdown filter?

Also, how do I show sub-categories of Publications in a dropdown? And when a user select any of those sub-categories, it will show the list of items from that sub-category with the document type filter.
