Hello

sure you can, (see GPLnn License) please include:
- credits at the top to all source files of the new component
- credits inside the components "credits" page
- creadit at credits page of the web-site that will host the component

we do the same thing see our creadits page:
e.g. see (we need to update it because there are some new JS scripts shipped with FLEXIcontent v2.2.0 BETA):
www.flexicontent.org/project/credits.html

and don't fotget that you need to mention not only FLEXIcontent but all other 3rd party script included with it, e.g. jQuery Select2 JS, phpThumb etc, etc

finally component is very large, and maintaining it without writting the original code will be difficult ... e.g. ACL

plus you will have to face changes to Joomla itself ... because FC is tied to joomla com_content DB tables

but if you are up-to it ;) sure go ahead

Regards

think to work with plugin (yours) and maybe an onther component to connect to flexicontent => without hacking it will be simple for update
