3. after modifying phpThumb.config_OVERRIDE.php, item page is now completely unreachable with no error log.

you need to set correct path and also be careful not to make any PHP syntax error

about backend, use:
Extensions / FLEXIcontent / Items
Extensions / FLEXIcontent / Category

the:
Content / articles
Content / categories
may or may not be redirected, it depends on the configuration that you have in plugin:
System - FLEXIcontent CORE functions

I tried different path, with no luck. I think that I'll abandon the idea of using this option.
