yes, see other code,
also it depends on template
e.g. if you do at top of file:

<?php $item = & $this->item; ?>

then you can use both

got it all working, except for ordering on publish_up date. bit stupid of me not to check that first.

FLEXIcontent Downloads Section

it has J2.5 ACL "Edit creation time"

to select user groups that will be able to edit item creation time in frontend item form. NOTE users must have publish privilege in order to do this,

then you can use "Created" core field in your templates and order your categories by it

as an user from group 'admiminstrator' it works on backend, but not on frontend.
i hadn't tested in backend before, so i cant say if that has changed.
on the frontend it does show the field 'creation time', but changes are not saved

Yes DB model prevents altering it, and by mistake enabled this only in J1.5

please install v2.0 RC9b r1600 which has this issue fixed:
