The Image field Thumbnails bloating the site!

However, if I set the resize option to very small in the original, then all the image thumbnails (small, medium and large)  take the size of the
original images during viewing.

I mentioned , in regards to have a suitable upper limit for the originals that
- improves upload times
- does not waste space by having too large dimensions
- but it is also large enough for having proper quality during thumbnail generation

about removing the originals completely,
currently there is no support for it since it will break thumbnail size / existence checks

Thanks George. Could you consider this as a feature request to remove the originals as these do not serve any use as the backend, small, medium and large thumbnails are saved also.

Also, how do I change the settings where the entire image folder is deleted once the item is trashed?

you mean when an item is deleted you want to prevent deletion of the folder with the item's images ?

What I mean is that if I delete the item, then the image folder for that item should also get deleted.
