the error is probably related to updating
phpThumb (v1.7.11 to v1.7.13)

and it is different configuaration / behaviour of phpThumb
or probably some PHP notice/warning/error related to the above

can you do as save as on the image and view it in a text editor ?

Hello, I saved the image and opened it in my editor but it wasn't very helpful, see attachment. I'm also attaching the image itself so maybe you can open it in your editor and see what it says.
The problem doesn't occur in all fields, just some (sorry for being vague but I can't see a pattern).

An example image has the path eastravelcms.wilddogdevelopment.com/comp...ief-1.jpg&w=120&h=90 which fails to load, however eastravelcms.wilddogdevelopment.com/imag...hou-bas-relief-1.jpg definitely is there and loads correctly

At the top of the image file you have:

In my global configuration the timezone is set to UTC.
I will ask the sysadmin about php.ini
