FLEXIcontent is Free but involves a very big effort on our part.

The easiest way is usually the best solution.
Arent you guys thinking on moving to GIT?
If so we could fork it and submit the change via git and GGDDPK would accept or not the changes. This is how the communities are now growing and fast.
For example the BRAQUETS EDITOR project from Adobe is this approach that allows them to release monthly updates.
