maybe 3 columns can be added without changes to the template

For starting try this (for featured items):
Code:
/* remove clearfix between featured items */ .mod_flexicontent_featured span.clearfix { display:none!important; } /* try to force container of featured items to be 3-columed */ .mod_flexicontent_featured_wrapper { display:block!important; float:left!important; clear:none!important; width: 30%; /* maybe try 31% */ padding-left:1%; padding-right:1%; margin-left:0%; margin-right:0%; }
Test and correct

Regards

That worked. Thanks. I assume then that neither the news.css or the news.php are overwritten during upgrades, correct?

Both are overwritten on upgrades,
-- please place these new rules inside a different css file, e.g. in one of your joomla template css files

also put in front of your rules, 2 more class to increase their priority:
.mod_flexicontent .mod_flexicontent_wrapper

so the rules will be:
Code:
/* remove clearfix between featured items */ .mod_flexicontent .mod_flexicontent_wrapper .mod_flexicontent_featured span.clearfix { ......... } /* try to force container of featured items to be 3-columed */ .mod_flexicontent .mod_flexicontent_wrapper .mod_flexicontent_featured_wrapper { .......... }

I needed to also change the layout a bit so I updated the news.php file. If it's going to be overwritten, it sounds like I need to create my own layout file. How do I tell it to use this new layout?

(edit) Also, going back to the original issue, what is the minimum permissions needed to allow someone to see the manage permissions area?

Since you can set this permission per item, look at it is the last permission column

Sorry, I'm not understanding. Can I set some group of flexiaccess permissions to give a user access to set permissions on the items? If so, what specific set of permissions is needed? Manage User under the general section doesn't see to be the correct one.

Edit the item and open item permissions slider, it is the last column called "Perms". There you can give any user or group access to the item permissions

Great, that's half of what I need. Is there also a way to have that set to "on" for a group by default-when content is created? I'm not the one who creates or manages the content so would rather not have to manage the permissions for all the content.

mmm, yes, do the following in order to give permission editing action to the group:

-- go to Joomla Backend, Menu: Components/Flexiaccess
-- Click "Frontend and Content"
-- at the left of the screen, Click on "articles" (do not click on the crooss, just click on the name "articles")
-- Click on the last column (column name is GRANT-perms) to the group that need.
